Recently, the modified version of the Nothing 2a was launched, made by fans of the brand. This year, Nothing has launched several variants of its smartphone. CEO Carl Pei has made some notable comments about Google’s Android operating system, comments that are likely to cause tension within Alphabet. Following Huawei, Nothing may also be working on its own mobile operating system.

Will it create its own operating system?

At a recent event, Nothing revealed that it is currently exploring the possibility of developing its own mobile operating system. The company is in the process of determining what Nothing OS will look like as it looks to reduce its dependence on Google’s Android. Pei pointed out that more than 80 percent of smartphones worldwide run on the Android system, highlighting the clear monopoly of Google and Alphabet. The team considers ways to break away from this dominance.

Pei emphasized that the rise of Google Android has hindered innovation in user interface design. He believes that in addition to hardware, software can also significantly increase the appeal of a product. He argued that there needs to be a renewed focus on the user experience, as the operating system has remained largely unchanged over the past forty years.

Devices, whether computers or smartphones, store a wealth of personal information and facilitate a multitude of tasks. So improving their experience is essential.

Need for change

Furthermore, Nothing plans to integrate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) into Nothing OS, simplifying the operating system development process. It is important to note that we cannot classify any operating system solely as an AI operating system; AI serves more as a tool. Prior to Nothing, Huawei ventured a few years ago to create HarmonyOS, which is vastly different from Android.

The push to develop its own operating system came after Huawei was locked out of the US market due to the 2019 US-China trade conflict, which also led to restrictions on the use of Android. As a result, Huawei had to create its own operating system.
