Bay Village City Schools Celebrate Veterans Day: Short Takes on the Westshore

Bay Village, OH

Bay Village City Schools, a Purple Star District, has a long tradition of celebrating Veterans Day with a variety of activities throughout the district.

At the Glenview Center for Child Care & Learning, the First Grade Room will read books about veterans and hold a parade around Glenview with flags.

Second-grade students at Normandy Elementary School will make stars in honor of veterans who are friends or family members. Current Norman parents and grandparents who are veterans will also read to students. The second grade Normandy Afterschool Club makes cards and bookmarks for veterans at local hospitals.

Each year, Westerly Elementary School creates a wall of honor in the main hallway of the school named “Our ‘Stars’ in the Fight for Freedom.” Each student receives a star that can be filled out by his or her family and turned in for display. The star includes the child’s name, the veteran’s name and their branch of service. Westerly will also host a school-wide assembly on November 8.

Bay Middle School students will watch videos about paying tribute to veterans, listen to speakers and write letters to veterans thanking them for their service.

Melissa Wolfe, library media specialist; and teacher Cassy Hunt have students interview veterans. They record the audio and create posters for the hallways with QR codes to share the audio files.

They also offer veterans the opportunity to have their recordings submitted to the Library of Congress. If selected, their story will become a primary source on file with the Library of Congress.

Students at Maker’s Space at the high school have designed American flag cups and keychains to give to veterans as a thank you gift.

The community is also encouraged to save the date when Bay High School will hold its fourth annual Military Appreciation Night on Jan. 24 during the junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games against North Olmsted High School in the high school gymnasium.

WESTLAKE

Delivering a pumpkin: Westlake is one of 10 locations in Cuyahoga County participating in the Solid Waste District pumpkin and gourd composting program. There is a special 60-foot collection container at the Westlake Police Department, 27300 Hilliard Blvd., where residents can dispose of their pumpkins through Nov. 8.

Remove candles, decorations and stickers. Pumpkins that have been bleached, chemically treated, painted, or drawn with permanent markers will not be accepted. Do not place pumpkins in bags.

Do not place corn stalks, hay bales, yard waste or other kitchen waste in the pumpkin collection containers.

For more information, visit cuyahogarecycles.org/pumpkin_collection.

Veterans Monument: Very early in the planning stages, a group of citizens and community organizations met last month to discuss plans to build a Veterans Memorial in the city. Like surrounding communities such as Avon and North Ridgeville, the monument would be a dedicated space to honor members of the armed forces.

To learn more about the project, email Mary Beth Schneidler at [email protected], Lysa Stanton and David Pfister at [email protected], or Bud Tetzlaff at [email protected].

Holiday wreath program: Several years ago the Westlake Historical Society began placing wreaths on the graves of founding and pioneering citizens of early Dover (now Westlake). They are now expanding the ability for residents, organizations, groups or businesses to place a Christmas wreath(s) in memory of someone buried in Westlake at Evergreen, Maple Ridge and surrounding cemeteries.

Volunteers from the Westlake Historical Society will be placing wreaths on graves throughout the holiday season. The suggested donation is $25 per wreath. To sponsor a wreath(s), call Lysa at 216-848-0680. For more information, visit westlakeohiohistory.org.

Holiday Show: The Clague Playhouse, 1371 Clague Road, presents “Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley,” by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon, Nov. 8 – Dec. 8, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m

After the shows on November 9, November 17 and December 1, a new Talk-Back conversation with the cast and crew will take place.

The show is a sequel to Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ set two years after the end of the novel. ‘Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley’ continues the story, only this time with bookish middle sister Mary as the unlikely heroine, according to information from the Clague Playhouse. Mary grows tired of her role as dutiful middle sister despite her siblings’ romantic escapades. When the family gathers for Christmas in Pemberley, an unexpected guest raises Mary’s hopes for independence, an intellectual match and possibly even love.
