Two Delhi Traffic Police officers were hit by a car and dragged over its bonnet for 20 meters on Saturday evening when they tried to stop the vehicle as it crossed a traffic signal in south-west Delhi’s Kishangarh. The perpetrator’s car has been identified, but the suspect has yet to be arrested, police said.

The two constables were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Pramod Singh and Head Constable Sailesh Chouhan. They suffered minor injuries and were discharged from Safdarjung Hospital after treatment, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary said.

According to police, the control room was informed about the incident at Ber Sarai Road in Kishangarh around 8 pm. The caller informed them that a car had hit traffic policemen and asked for a PCR vehicle but not an ambulance. Police who arrived on the scene discovered that the officers had been taken to the hospital and upon follow-up found them unconscious in the hospital.

After they recovered, their statements were recorded.

DCP Choudhary said the two constables, stationed at Vasant Vihar roundabout, were conducting a mobile prosecution on Vedant Deshika Marg around 7.45 pm when a white car jumped the red light and drove towards them. “Chouhan signaled the car to stop and initially the driver of the car stopped the car. When Chouhan asked the driver to get down from the car, the driver tried to run away from the spot, dragged them on the bonnet for about 20 meters and later hit them and fled from the spot,” the DCP said.

Police said the incident scene was inspected by the Mobile Crime and Forensic Team. Camera images have also been collected and analyzed.

“The police officers alleged that the car driver had caused obstruction in their official duty and further attempted to kill the said police officials by dragging them onto his car. According to the facts, circumstances and statements of the injured officers, there is a prima facie case of an offense of attempted murder and obstruction of the performance of official duties,” an officer said.

A case was registered under Section 109(1)/221/132/121(1)/3(5) of the BNS on Saturday.

“The investigation into the offending vehicle and the suspect is ongoing. The offending vehicle is registered in the name of Jai Bhagwan, resident of Nangal Devat in Vasant Kunj. However, it is yet to be established whether he was driving the vehicle or not,” the officer said.
