Lufkin ISD cheers students and adults at the hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on the Southwest Freeway involving a school bus

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Three high school cheerleaders and one adult were hospitalized Sunday morning after a crash involving eight vehicles, including a school bus.

More than 30 Lufkin ISD students and several adults were on the bus when it crashed just before 11:50 a.m. on US 59 near the Fannin Street exit.

The bus was transporting the district cheerleading team to a competition in Rosenberg, but after the crash the team turned around and returned to Lufkin.

According to Transtar, the accident spread across four lanes of the highway.

Houston police told ABC13 that the team’s bus driver was issued a citation. However, they declined to say what the citation was for, citing the ongoing investigation by their Vehicle Crimes Unit.

A team parent told ABC13 that the three hospitalized students were released Sunday evening. Houston police described the injuries of those hospitalized as minor.
