Dear Abby: I’m turning 18 soon, but I don’t feel ready to be an adult yet

DEAR ABBY: In six months I will be 18. I know I should be happy, but to be completely honest, I’m afraid of growing up. I don’t feel like I’m ready to grow up and leave my childhood behind. What should I do? What CAN I do? — UNHAPPY BIRTHDAY

DEAR UNHAPPY: What exactly are you afraid of? Not all people mature at the same pace. Some people don’t take on the responsibilities of adulthood until they are over 21 years old. Others are ready at the age of 18, provided they have already been given some responsibilities by their parents. The insecurities you experience are things you should talk to them about. You can also discuss this with a trusted teacher or counselor at school. As you do, you may realize that you are far from alone in the feelings you are experiencing.
