Is there a release date for The Diplomat Season 3? Netflix series renewal explained

After that explosive ending to season 2, fans will be happy to know that season 3 of The Diplomat is already in development at Netflix. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!)

The Diplomat may be the hardest working political drama ever Netflix now. With 173.46 million hours watched after the first season premiered, the streaming service has worked quickly to keep the show on top.

Season 2 arrived in October 2024 and delivered the shocker, revealing that the attack on HMS Courageous had come from within. As if that wasn’t enough, the second season ended with the unexpected death of President William Rayburn, who died of a heart attack after hearing the news.

That’s a lot to take in, and it leaves the door open for some big political plays in Season 3. Fortunately, the wait may not be as long as you think.

Is there a release date for The Diplomat season 3?

There is no confirmed release date for The Diplomat season 3, but there is good news: it has already been greenlit and new episodes have already been filmed!

That’s pretty unprecedented since then Season 2 did not air on Netflix until October 31, 2024. In fact, the Season 3 announcement arrived three weeks later for Season 2 even premiered.

In the current landscape of shows being canceled left and right, that’s an incredible indicator of how much confidence the streamer has in its political thriller.

When the announcement was made, Netflix also confirmed that new episodes were being filmed in London and New York City, so progress is well underway!

Series creator Debora Cahn told Variety: “After a great summer shoot in Great Britain, we brought London to New York. The best of both worlds: filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We are so excited to continue.”

Luckily, the gap between seasons 1 and 2 of The Diplomat was blissfully short at just 18 months. Since production on season 3 is already underway, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect new episodes to hit Netflix in early 2026.

How many episodes will season 3 have?

Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn has confirmed that this will be the case eight episodes in Season 3.

Fans of the show will have noticed that season 2 has been reduced to six episodes instead of repeating season 1’s eight. Like Cahn revealed for TVLine, that drop in episodes was initially her choice.

“(Netflix) wasn’t happy. They wanted the full eight. I was very tired. It was just a matter of time.”

She added: “It felt like there wasn’t enough time to turn eight of them around. There was a lot to get done in what seemed like a short time.

“If we had known it would take a year and a half before we would be back in the air, things would have been different. Season 3 will consist of eight episodes.”

The Diplomat Season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
