A sneaky hidden message in Silent Hill 2 Remake seems like strong evidence for a long-held theory, but don’t expect the Bloober team to confirm anything

The Silent Hill 2 remake has a secret hidden, and one that could be proof of a theory that fans have harbored for years.

Spoilers ahead!

One of the most interesting things about it Silent Hill 2 is the fact that it has several endings that are all determined by the smallest decisions you make during your playthrough, but one thing fans have never really been able to say for sure is which one is canon. Masahiro Ito, the creator of Pyramid Head himself, has even said as much before every ending is canonwhich helped fuel a theory fans have had for a long time: that Silent Hill 2 is actually a time loop, with protagonist James Sunderland continually re-experiencing the same events as punishment for the way he treated his wife Mary. And now fans have discovered a secret message that some say provides evidence for this theory.

In the game you can collect 26 newly added photos, all of which show different parts of the city, along with some strange messages. This puzzled fans for a while, but yesterday Reddit user DaleRobinson cracked the code: “If you count things in each photo (for example, the open windows in photo 1 = 6),” the user explains, “then count that number over whole picture. If you write on each one, you will get a letter.” DaleRobinson did just that and found that the photos conveyed the message: You’ve been here for two decades.

Creative director and lead designer at Bloober Team confirmed on Twitter that this is correct. write on Twitter“I knew it wouldn’t stay hidden for long! (There was a theory in our company that the puzzle might be too difficult) I wanted to make it very subtle when I was painting those pictures… I think the timing was not possible It is better for you to solve it. Congratulations!”

It should be noted that technically this does not outright confirm the theory. After all, it could be a tongue-in-cheek comment on the fact that the game is about twenty years old, but it seems pretty clear that it’s a reference to the theory. at the very least. When a fan noted that the loop theory is canon, Lenart did respond “Is that so?” so it’s clearly still meant to be up in the air, which will be good news for some as not everyone likes the theory (I’d put myself in that category, especially as it puts a cynical note on the end of leave). Whether it’s Canon or not it doesn’t really matter, but it’s a fun little puzzle and I’m sure a lot of fans will be happy when it’s solved.
