Verdict reached in the murder case against Adam Coy

The jury in the murder trial of former Columbus police officer Adam Coy has reached a verdict in his murder case.

The verdict is expected to be read in court on Monday afternoon. ABC 6 will stream the reading of the verdict live here on this page at 12:45 p.m. Several members of Hill’s family were already at the courthouse as of 12:10 p.m., ABC 6 reported.

The 15-member paneldeliberated all day on Thursday and Fridaywhich ended without a decision on Friday afternoon. Jurors returned at 9:30 a.m. Monday and indicated they had reached a verdict just before noon.

Coy is charged with murder, reckless homicide and assault in connection with the Recorded by Andre Hill in December 2020. During his testimony last week, Coy said he thought Hill had a gun in his hand. Heemotionally testified that he “had no doubt” that Hill was holding a silver revolver in his right hand and feared for his life.

It was later determined that Hill had a set of keys in his hand.

Defense attorneys rested their case Tuesday and called retired CPD and SWAT officer Jim Scanlon as an expert witness.

When questioned by the defense about the use of deadly force, Scanlon said, “No, they are trained to do the opposite. You can’t wait for that violence to be used on you. You have to respond to that threat. is a reasonably perceived threat, you must respond.”

Prosecutors have argued that Coy acted recklessly in shooting Hill.

Closing arguments were held on Wednesdayand jury deliberations began Thursday morning. Legal experts have noted the complexity of the case. Mark Weaver, a former special counsel, said, “I would be surprised if they could reach a unanimous verdict here.”
