Scammers stage their surrogate scam with a fake arrest warrant

Scammers stage their surrogate scam with a fake arrest warrant

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Brown County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about yet another harassment scam.

We know that scams are becoming more elaborate every day, and we don’t want you to fall for this new twist in the ‘Deputy Scam’ or ‘Jury Scam’.

It’s a false arrest warrant. A fake deputy uses a fake arrest warrant to threaten the target with a false felony charge.

The one we saw is for failure to appear before the jury.

The sheriff’s office says someone received it as a text message, which is certainly a red flag (the sheriff’s office will not text you about an upcoming arrest). Be on the lookout in case this comes to your email or you see it on social media.

In this case, the arrest document makes the scam intimidating and even credible.

It is also signed by a judge, which is not a real signature.

You will never be contacted in this way about an actual arrest warrant, you will never be asked to pay any money – that’s the court’s job – and you will never be presented with threatening language.

The fake arrest warrant contains a number of errors (the spelling “Browm” County is the most obvious) and the document is outdated, but it can be a little frightening when you receive this and it makes you too anxious to read some of these things to notice.

If you ever have any concerns or questions about receiving an arrest warrant this way, call the sheriff’s office.

By reporting these types of cases or scams, you can ensure that you or anyone else does not become a victim.
