News and notes

1. Bowen Byram remained in a defensive pairing with Rasmus Dahlin after the two teamed up Saturday in Detroit.

The Sabers defeated the Red Wings 27-6, with Dahlin and Byram sharing the ice at 5-on-5, according to Natural Stat Trick. Dahlin alone had thirteen shot attempts.

“I thought the puck movement going up the ice was really good. It helped us offensively a few times when we got into the zone, we had a lot of zone time,” Ruff said. “Sometimes we didn’t get enough attacking time. But I thought overall it went pretty well getting out on the ice with those two guys.

2. Ruff said there’s a “good chance” Jacob Bryson will be in the lineup against the Senators after the defenseman impressed in his debut against the Red Wings. Bryson played that game with Mattias Samuelsson, but skated alongside Owen Power on Monday.

“I think he’s a very smart, reliable guy,” Ruff said. “That first pass is good. The attention to detail in the D zone was good. And that also applies to not playing for a long time.”

3. Ruff was asked how the Sabers can achieve consistency after the 2-1 loss in Detroit, a game they controlled 5-on-5 but lost due to special teams.

“Not accepting that is good enough,” Ruff said. “Not accepting that we have done a lot of good things. “We have to win games, that’s the key. Raise the standard, raise the expectation. I’m not going to stand here and talk about it. We did good things, but finished the right things, finished those great chances, but in the back of the net. That’s what we’re here for.”
