Female KZN officer shoots dead colleague and injures another during domestic operation

PORT SHEPSTONE – A police officer in KwaZulu-Natal has died, allegedly at the hands of a colleague, while conducting a tactical operation near Port Shepstone.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday, November 3, 2024 in Boboyi on the South Coast. An eight-member team of Public Order Policing (POPs) and the K-9 unit responded to a domestic complaint in the area around 10 p.m.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Phaladi Shuping told Short news Police at the time were trying to locate a suspected violent suspect.

“During a tactical action to subdue the suspect, a stun grenade was deployed in one of the rooms of the house. An officer, thinking she was being attacked, reportedly opened fire with her R-5 rifle, accidentally hitting two colleagues.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu K-9 unit member suffered injuries. We remain committed to supporting those affected by this tragedy and will do everything possible to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.”

Shuping said the incident had been reported to IPID for investigation.

“The directorate is investigating culpable homicide and negligent discharge of a firearms charge,” he said.

Responding to the incident, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu said his department was committed to supporting those affected.

“And we will do everything possible to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future,” Mchunu said.

He encouraged increased caution during tactical operations, especially during high-risk situations.

“A full IPID investigation is underway (and) we urge the directorate to expedite this to provide clarity and closure. (Meanwhile), we (please) all law enforcement teams to exercise maximum caution in planning and executing operations,” he added.
