There was a somber procession early Tuesday morning for that 6th District officer. Lines of police vehicles escort his body to the medical examiner’s office.

The shooting happened in the East Chatham neighborhood, near East 80th Street and South Ingleside Avenue, around 8 p.m.

CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said officers stopped and approached the vehicle with three people inside. At that moment, someone inside fired shots, hitting the 26-year-old officer several times. Another person in the vehicle was also fatally shot.

Snelling said at one point an officer on the scene fired his weapon. Detectives are still analyzing the firearms of the officers involved in Monday night’s incident, he added.

A Chicago police officer was one of two people shot and killed Monday night on the city’s South Side, CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said said.

The suspected gunman attempted to flee on foot but was later taken into custody, Snelling said. A third person, who was in the back seat of the car, was arrested at the scene.

“At this time we know that there was one officer who fired his weapon at the scene. Those officers’ weapons remain under investigation at this time,” said Chief Larry Snelling. “There is evidence that can be recovered. And that’s all the information we have about it right now.”

Authorities said the suspected shooter tried to get away. Driving away from the crime scene and hitting one of the other officers. The suspect then ran away, but was apprehended a few blocks away.

Chief Inspector Snelling said one of the suspects was under electronic surveillance but may have cut off his ankle monitor. That news prompted Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara to call for more responsibility in fighting crime.

“Does my face look surprised?” Catanzara said. ‘Unfortunately that is not the case. In this province, in this city, it’s just the status quo. Again, they can do whatever they want to do and you keep making excuses

A third person in the vehicle was arrested. The other injured officer is expected to be doing well.

According to police, an officer at the scene fired the weapon. The scene is still being analyzed.

Officers found two weapons at the scene.

One of the weapons was in the possession of the person who suffered fatal gunshot wounds in the vehicle. The other weapon is a semi-automatic weapon with an extended magazine.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating

Snelling said CPD is not yet releasing the officer’s name to allow his family to grieve.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also spoke at Monday night’s news conference, and he and Snelling asked Chicagoans to keep the officer’s family in their thoughts.
