‘Silent Hill 2 Remake’ easter egg confirms long-running fan theory about time loops

The Silent Hill 2 remakehas been out for just under a month, and one fan believes they’ve proven a decades-old fan theory.

For those unfamiliar, Silent Hill 2 takes protagonist James Sunderland to a creepy town that torments him at every turn. The game has several endings and developer Masahiro Ito does too claimed they are all canon.

As noted by VG247one Redditor believes they’ve discovered a hidden message in the remake’s photos. They explain: “If you count things in each photo (for example, the open windows in photo 1 = 6), and then count that number over the letters in each photo, you get a letter.”

You can check out the Reddit post above if you want to see how they’re working, but the post includes the words: “YOU’VE BEEN HERE FOR TWO DECADES.” This would confirm a fan theory that James is stuck in a time loop, a punishment for the way he treated his wife Mary.

Bloober Team creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart wrote on Xpreviously Twitter: “I knew it wouldn’t stay hidden for long! (There was a theory in our company that the puzzle might be too difficult.)

This doesn’t necessarily confirm the timeloop fan theory, it could just be a reference to the original game that came out over twenty years ago, but it certainly adds to the fan theory’s credibility. When a fan replied: “The loop theory is canon,” Lenart responded“Is that so?” So it is certainly still up to you to interpret as you wish.

Like a lot of media, this may never have been the original intention, but the fan theory could have inspired the developers to retroactively make it happen. The original explanation that all endings are canon could also refer to James’ mental state, meaning he experiences all realities simultaneously.

In other news, Sony has confirmed all 55 games will receive graphical upgrades on the PS5 Pro when it launches later this week.
