After vaulting to the top of the NFC East, the Washington Commanders made a big splash before the NFL trade deadline by acquiring four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Saints will receive a third-round draft pick in 2025 plus additional compensation from Washington in exchange for Lattimore.

ESPNs Adam Schefter added New Orleans will also add a 2025 fourth-round pick and receive its own sixth-round pick traded to Washington during the preseason for John Ridgeway. The Commanders also receive a fifth-round selection in the deal.

The Commanders are locked in a battle with the Philadelphia Eagles, who have wide receiver AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, for first place in the division. Adding Lattimore to their defense will slow down the passing game for opponents.

The Saints have always struggled to balance their salary cap $4.2 million in available cap space this season before trading Lattimore. The Commanders had the sixth most cap room in the league $25.1 million.

Here are the updated defensive depth charts for both teams, along with a full list of their 2025 draft picks.

It didn’t take long for Jayden Daniels to completely change the tenor around the Commanders organization.

ESPNs Adam Schefter reported Saturday that league players said privately or to their agents that they wanted to be traded to Washington.

While it’s unclear whether Lattimore fell into that category, it’s a great fit for both parties. The 28-year-old is not the type of player he was earlier in his career when he was a ballhawk, but he is still very effective when playing on the outside.

Lattimore is giving up just one reception per 30.1 coverage snaps and has allowed 83 total yards as a primary defender this season.

Cobie Durant allowed more yards yesterday (93) than Marshon Lattimore has allowed all season (83).
However, Durant has otherwise been quite competitive.

First-year head coach Dan Quinn has the Commanders’ defense arranged fifth in passing yards allowed per game (183.3), but their 14 passing touchdowns allowed are tied for ninth place in the competition.

This is a stark turnaround for the franchise that traded away Chase Young and Montez Sweat at last year’s trade deadline. Lattimore’s talent will be tested right away as the Commanders’ next two games are against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Eagles.

The Saints could begin a long-awaited rebuild after their 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Trading Lattimore comes a day after them dismissed head coach Dennis Allen.

Allen’s dismissal came amid a seven-game losing streak after a 2-0 start this season. The Saints will still be in purgatory even without Lattimore on their roster.

Anyone who says, “Get a pick now for a player you don’t need,” is grossly underestimating how bad the 2025 cap situation is for the Saints right now. They really need players who choose to retire. https://t.co/1SXK6Cx6ty

Lattimore will still count $20.6 million against the Saints’ cap hit in 2025, but trading him will save the club $16 million in cash expenses next year.

On the plus side, this trade gives the Saints six picks in the first four rounds of the 2025 draft. They desperately need to replenish their roster with young, cost-controlled talent to get out of their current cap situation and beyond purgatory where they have been since 2021.
