Students at Chalmette High were injured in a crash involving five buses near Lafayette, authorities said

LAFAYETTE, La. (WVUE) – Several Chalmette High School students were injured Tuesday (Nov. 5) in a highway crash involving five school buses and a truck pulling a tire trailer, according to school officials.

Lafayette police told the television station KDAN that six students had suffered “mild to moderate injuries.” But school officials told Fox 8 that nine students were treated at a hospital for injuries and released.

The crash happened around 12:45 p.m. on westbound Interstate 10 near the I-10/I-49 interchange. I-10 westbound was closed in the area until shortly after 2:30 p.m.

According to KDANThe crash occurred when one school bus rear-ended another, causing a chain reaction, police said.

The students were headed to Lake Charles for a Louisiana high school marching band competition at McNeese Cowboy Stadium, featuring 69 bands and about 6,500 students.
