‘Good Samaritans’ shot while helping a vehicle along the road in Mpumalanga

‘Good Samaritans’ shot while helping a vehicle along the road in Mpumalanga

Victims were robbed of their own guns after being shot and police have warned motorists to consider their own safety before helping others.

Two men were shot in the early hours of the morning after pulling up next to a stationary vehicle.

The brothers were seen opening fire along the R40 near the Kruger National Park at around 2.30am on Sunday.

The victims, described by police as “Good Samaritans,” were reportedly familiar with the vehicle they stopped to help, and were later robbed of their own firearm.

Roadside assistance

Police say the victims stopped at the vehicle because they believed the occupants needed help.

As soon as they stopped, an unknown gunman opened fire on the men, wounding one in the lower body and the other in the back.

After suffering gunshot wounds, the brothers were robbed, with the attackers taking a gun they had in their possession.

“They were robbed of one firearm. After the shooting and robbery, one of the victims managed to drive to the hospital for medical attention,” police confirmed Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Captain Magonseni Nkosi.

“One of the victims succumbed to his injuries in hospital,” Captain Nkosi confirmed.

Safety first

If members of the public have more information about the shooting, they are urged to contact the police as soon as possible.

Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi asked motorists to consider their own safety when trying to help others.

The acting commissioner urged community members to contact authorities first before putting themselves in potentially dangerous situations.

Man hit while helping a pedestrian

Meanwhile, earlier this year, a man was hit by a car while trying to help a pedestrian who had allegedly been hit by a taxi.

While getting out of another passing taxi, the man was hit as he tried to get the pedestrian off the road, reported by Courier North Coast.

Samantha Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue reported that both men suffered serious injuries.

“Both patients, who are in their 30s, were stabilized at the scene and transported to hospital under the care of advanced life support paramedics,” Meyrick said.
