‘He was full of life’: Firefighters urge public to think after veteran horse terrified by fireworks had to be put down

  • A 30-year-old horse that was a ‘fantastic partner’ and ‘full of life’ had to be put down after being terrified by fireworks are dropped off nearby.

Firefighters with the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service shared Claude’s story and urged people to let neighbors know if they plan to set off fireworks or attend organized demonstrations.

“I’m sharing this message with animals like Claude in mind,” said a spokesman for the Newport Fire Department.

“Claude became afraid of fireworks and panicked and ended up in a position from which he could no longer get out.”

The spokesperson said crews from Newport and the agency’s animal rescue unit were dispatched to the scene and worked diligently to get Claude out of his stable.

“Unfortunately, Claude did not have the strength to get up after being exhausted and in an uncomfortable position,” the spokesperson added. “The entire Newport crew is thinking of Claire and her family at this difficult time.

“These types of incidents stick with everyone involved and can be very traumatic. So if you plan on lighting fireworks, let your neighbors know. If you can, go to an organized event.”

Claire thanked the fire brigade, especially the Newport crew.

“Claude, one veteran from the Qunedon, Clavering and Newport bridleways and pictured here galloping in Newmarket at a charity event, was cast into his stable,” she said.

“It’s the dilemma of all horse owners whether you want to stable a horse on grass or keep it outside during the fireworks season. This time I chose wrong.

“The kindness and attention of the crew was wonderful and I will always be grateful for it, but unfortunately, as soon as he was removed from the stable, the attending veterinarian recommended that Claude be euthanized. RIP Claude, a fantastic partner in many adventures.”
