A young police volunteer has appeared in court accused of fabricating claims she was sexually assaulted by a stalker.

Laura Kilty, 20, was working as a volunteer with Surrey Police when she reported a man was stalking and sexually assaulting her, sparking a major police investigation and public outcry.

She had told police that the alleged incident took place on September 29 when she was leaving work.

Her clothing was taken for examination and two statements were made, the court was told.

The young woman appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court today charged with perverting the course of justice.

She was later charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Kilty stood in the dock and was charged with committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice.

Surrey Police said the alleged offense was not related to Kilty’s role as a volunteer with the force.

Reading out the charge today, the clerk said: ‘On September 29 last year, at Guildford Police Station, with intent to pervert the course of justice, you made a false allegation and this alone is an indictable offence.’

Prosecutor Natalie Roepke told the court that Kilty reported that a man had sexually assaulted her while she was leaving work. She also claimed that the man was stalking her.

Kilty, from Guildford, Surrey, was granted conditional bail yesterday.

Presiding Magistrate Caroline Drury told Kilty that the matter was too serious for the magistrates to hear and that the case would be sent to the Crown Court.

Kilty is due to appear at Guildford Crown Court on December 9 at 10am.
