Two FIRs have been filed against actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty for allegedly making provocative statements at a BJP event in the Salt Lake area of Calcutta last month, police said on Wednesday.

The complaints relate to Chakraborty’s speech on October 27 at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Center (EZCC) in Salt Lake, during a BJP program attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was in Calcutta for the to launch the party’s West Bengal membership campaign.

The first FIR was lodged at Bidhannagar South police station on the basis of a complaint from an individual, while the second was lodged at Bowbazar police station.

“We have started an investigation into the matter,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar police.

Shah was also present at the programme, which was organized to kick off the West Bengal arm of the BJP’s membership drive. Shah had also congratulated Chakraborty as he was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year.

While Chakraborty was not available for comment, state president and BJP minister Sukanta Majumdar described the FIRs as a result of “vendetta politics”.

Majumdar alleged that the TMC government has “once again used the police to unfairly target noted actor and senior BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty”.

He accused the chief minister of using such tactics “to serve political interests” and alleged that the state government’s actions were part of an ongoing attempt to discredit political opponents.

“There is nothing provocative in his speech. These are nothing but attempts to intimidate him by using the police as a political tool,” he said.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh termed the BJP’s allegations as baseless.

“The accusations of political revenge are baseless. He shouldn’t have made such provocative comments. The law will take its own course,” he said.

Chakraborty, who earlier this year received India’s highest film honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, had on October 27 claimed that the ‘masnad’ (throne) of West Bengal would belong to the BJP after the 2026 assembly elections, and vowed to do everything what was needed. takes to achieve the goal.

Speaking at the programme, Chakraborty, a BJP leader, said: “By 2026, the ‘masnad’ will be ours, and we will make every effort to achieve the goal.” In an apparent reference to TMC MLA Humayun Kabir’s communal comments targeting BJP workers during the Lok Sabha elections, Chakraborty is said to have made provocative remarks.

Chakraborty warned that no one should try to intimidate saffron party voters into abstaining from voting in the next assembly elections.

He called on his party’s workers to oppose such attempts.
