Santa Ana winds and increased fire risk are causing power outages in some communities

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Gas & Electric initiated public safety power shutoffs in some East County communities Wednesday morning in light of wind conditions in Santa Ana and increased fire conditions in the county.

A red flag warning for the province’s mountain areas would go into effect Wednesday at 3 p.m. and last until 11 a.m. Friday.

According to SDG&E’s Outage Map, the following backcountry communities were affected by the closures as of 11 a.m.:

  • Boulevard
  • Campo
  • Jacumba
  • Live Oak Springs

The utility said power was turned off to these communities “due to unsafe conditions in the area.”
The According to the website, 683 customers in Boulevard and Campo were without power as of 11 a.m

In a press release, SDG&E officials stated: “Community Resource Centers will be opened in the communities affected by a PSPS. These centers are equipped with resources to support anyone who needs it, including Wi-Fi and charging for phones and medical devices. The utility noted that customers “should remain prepared that they may be without power through Friday.”

Other communities that could potentially be affected by a PSPS include:

  • Alps
  • Chula View
  • El Cajon
  • Escondido
  • Julian
  • Shore of the lake
  • Ramona
  • Hello
  • Valley Center
