Zimbabwean police arrest a suspect in a case of theft of money in transit

The Republic of Zimbabwe Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of 24-year-old Kelvin Chisandako in connection with the theft of US$20,000 from a cash-in-transit vehicle on October 16, 2024. The money belongs to a private security company, was stolen during a transport route from Beitbridge to Mutare.

Following investigation leads, police arrested Chisandako on November 3 at Mangwawo Village, Mavvarire, Mwenezi, after receiving reports that he was in possession of unusually large amounts of cash. During interrogation, Chisandako admitted the theft and stated that he boarded the cash-in-transit vehicle at the Lutumba Business Center in Beitbridge.

The arrest led to the recovery of US$600, ZAR2,320, an empty cash box and a Toyota Aqua vehicle (registration number AGO 5702) that Chisandako had purchased for US$9,800. Police investigations further revealed that he had used some of the stolen money to acquire building materials, including thirty twelve-metre-high roof panels, 35 fifty-kilo bags of cement, seven window frames, two French doors, 15,000 bricks, a mobile phone and three men’s suits. .

The ZRP commended the public for providing critical information leading to the arrest and encouraged continued cooperation with law enforcement. Police reminded citizens to report criminal activity to the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, via WhatsApp on 0712 800 197, or by contacting the nearest police station.

“The Republic of Zimbabwe Police will ensure that the law takes its course against all criminals without fear or favour,” the ZRP said in a statement.
