16-year-old with ties to Manchester, NH, charged with murder of Springfield man

A 16-year-old boy with ties to New Hampshire is now in custody in Massachusetts, where he is accused of killing a 19-year-old man on a Springfield street last month, authorities said.

The teen’s name has not been released by police due to his age. However, under Massachusetts law, juveniles 16 or older are prosecuted as adults.

According to Springfield Police, the suspect was taken into custody last Friday by police from two states at a home in Manchester, NH on a murder warrant. He was extradited to Massachusetts on Wednesday, police said.

The teenager allegedly shot and killed Matthew Chaney Springfield around 12:35 p.m. on October 19 in the 100 block of Nursery Street, police said. Chaney was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
