Third suspect charged in fatal shooting in Detroit in May

A third suspect has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting in Melvindale last spring.

Kyren Harris, 20, of Van Buren Township, was charged Tuesday in 24th District Court in the death of 20-year-old Frederick Coleman Jr., Melvindale police said in a Facebook post.

Harris was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to online court records.

Judge John Courtright also set his bond at $1 million.

Harris’ arrest by the Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team and arraignment comes months after officials first announced charged two men in connection with the fatal shooting.

Melvindale police dispatched Melvindale police to respond to a report of a shooting at West Outer Drive and Seaway Drive on May 9 at 9:50 p.m., the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced in July.

Police arrived and found Coleman dead from multiple gunshot wounds in the driver’s seat of his car.

Taiwan Antonelli Cox Jr., 21, and Curtis Damon Harris, 18, were reportedly armed with handguns when they stopped at the intersection and fatally shot Coleman before fleeing.

Police arrested the two defendants on July 9. Both were charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Both Cox and Curtis Harris were ordered held without bond during their arraignment in July.

Cox and Curtis Harris last appeared in court on Oct. 25, but their proceedings were postponed for preliminary exams scheduled for Dec. 17, online court records show.

Kyren Harris’ preliminary exam is also scheduled for Dec. 17, following a probable cause hearing on Nov. 12.

Cox’s attorney, Mohammed Azeem Nasser, and Curtis Harris’ attorney, Gabi Silver, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Kyren Harris did not have an attorney listed as representing him in the online lawsuits as of Thursday morning.
