Kolkata: A 67-year-old man, a doctor’s father, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a class Police said the suspect allegedly climbed and crossed neighboring buildings before entering the room where the 16-year-old girl was sleeping alone. The suspect, identified as Paritosh Sarkar, a neighbor of the survivor, was remanded to police custody for five days on Thursday afternoon after being produced before a court in Basirhat.
According to family sources, the girl’s parents left her at home on Wednesday while they went to Calcutta to visit a relative. “The accused, one of our neighbors and the father of a well-known doctor in a hospital in Calcutta, took this opportunity and climbed over the roofs of two houses and entered the room where my daughter was sleeping alone. He then raped her and fled the scene,” the girl’s mother said in her complaint at the Hasnabad police station.
The family also alleged that the suspect threatened to kill the girl if she dared to inform anyone at home about the incident. When the girl’s parents returned home on Thursday evening, she broke down in tears and narrated her ordeal.
The girl’s family has also alleged that the suspect had molested her earlier and they had warned him that they would take legal action against him if he harassed her further. The girl’s mother said, “The elderly man had harassed my daughter several times. This time, he took advantage of our absence from home to commit this crime on Wednesday. We have demanded exemplary punishment for the suspect.”
Shortly after receiving the complaint, the police arrested the suspect from his home. “The suspect was arrested for allegedly raping the girl and was produced before the court. The girl was sent to a hospital for medical examination and her confidential statement was also recorded. An investigation is underway in this regard,” said Hossain Mehedi Rehman, SP, Basirhat told TOI.
