Washoe County schools shortened winter break by one day to make up for the Davis Fire cancellation

The Washoe County School District (WCSD) has announced changes to the school schedule for the remainder of the 2024-2025 academic year to meet state instructional day requirements following cancellations due to the Davis Fire in September.

In a statement sent to families Thursday, the district said: “In an effort to avoid adding more days to the end of the school year for students, we are canceling the scheduled professional learning day scheduled for Monday, January 6. As a result, all students and staff are expected to return to school for regular instruction on the first day after winter break, Monday, January 6.

In addition, the district has canceled spring parent conference week for elementary schools. Classes will continue as usual the week of Feb. 24-28 for balanced calendar schools and March 17-21 for Incline Village Elementary School.

The district also noted that if further cancellations are necessary due to weather or other circumstances, they will coordinate with the Nevada Department of Education to use the third and final emergency day on Wednesday, June 11, as a professional learning day for staff.

WCSD assured families that they will provide updates if further adjustments to the schedule occur.
