Great Adventure’s parent company may consider closing some of its theme parks in the future, officials said this week.

A spokesperson for Six Flags Entertainment Corporation said Thursday that none of the parks will close now, but that the company is reviewing all of its “assets,” according to an earnings call earlier this week.

Is Six Flags closing?

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation said in an earnings call this week that it may consider closing some of its 27 theme parks across the country.

Six Flags completed an $8 billion merger with Cedar Fair Entertainment in July.

The first from the new company quarterly earnings report outlined a long-term plan called “Project Accelerate,” which includes a “comprehensive review of the portfolio to evaluate the potential divestiture of non-core assets to help reduce debt burden.”

That assessment could result in the company deciding to sell some parks, but a company spokesperson said no sales are pending at this time.

“We have no plans to close any parks,” said Gary Rhodes.

Richard Zimmerman, CEO of Six Flags, told investors: “Every park in our portfolio plays a role. If it plays its role well, these are irreplaceable assets.”

He continued: “I wouldn’t put a timeframe on it, but we will be very diligent and methodical in working on what we think is possible.”

Is Six Flags Great Adventure in Danger?

While the company says none of its parks will close, the sale or closure of a number of Six Flags theme parks further afield is “now on the table,” reports Theme Park Insider.

In a quarterly earnings report, Six Flags outlined plans for an asset review and “additional cost savings across the portfolio” through 2025.

It is unclear whether the company’s review could result in future decongestion of the Six Flags theme park, consisting of Six Flags Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor and the Wild Safari Adventure.

Six Flags operates 27 theme parks and 15 water parks in North America, attracting 48 million visitors annually.

Great Adventure is one of the largest parks in the chain, with more than 2.5 million visitors annually.
