Paperwork filed to certify teenage murder suspect as an adult

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Toledo teen accused of beating a man to death will remain locked up at the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center.

The prosecutor has filed paperwork to start the process to have the teen tried as an adult and this case has had a number of twists and turns.

“You committed crimes against adults, so you must be fully punished,” said the victim’s sister, Quillistine Brown.

Curtis Marshall’s family said what happened at their brother’s home was senseless.

“Yesterday we had a funeral for my brother. He had many years left in his life and it was taken away from him. So I’m very upset,” said his sister Sheronda Davis.

21-year-old Ronnie Kanavel and a 15-year-old did facing murder charges accused of stomping and beating Marshall to death.

It happened at the victim’s home on Licking Street. The 15-year-old remains locked up. The juvenile prosecutor has filed court documents to begin the process of having the teen tried as an adult.

“His lawyer requested a hearing from the court yesterday. She is concerned about whether he is even capable of running for office, not just as an adult, but at all,” said Deputy Chief Lucas Count Juvenile Division Attorney Patricia Wardrop.

A doctor will assess him and submit an opinion to the court. The victim’s family wants justice.

‘If he can cut the monitor off his leg. He’s capable of making all these other choices and crimes and other things in life. He made decisions. He knew what he was doing. He’s not incompetent. He is competent and he should be tried as an adult,” Davis said

Police said the teen was with Ronnie Kanavel when they attacked Marshall.

Emotions run high in this case.

The The victim’s son was arrested days later the death of his father because he allegedly threatened to kill the relatives of a man suspected of killing his father.

According to court records, Demarcus Marshall Sr. seen behind the family’s home pointing a gun at the home.

He was stopped by police as he left the area and a gun was found in his car.

“Everything he did was out of pain. He’s not a bad person. It was just someone who snapped because he lost his father. I’m sure he would never hurt them like that. You committed crimes against adults, so you must be fully punished,” Davis said.

Ronnie Kanavel will appear in court on Friday.
