ITV viewers were left shocked after hearing Delia Balmer explain her harrowing experience escaping a serial killer.

This past week, the four-part series Until I Kill You told the true story from former nurse Delia, who discovered in the 1990s that her boyfriend of three years, John Sweeney, had a much darker side.

Based on her 2017 memoir, Living with a Serial Killer starred Motherland’s Anna Maxwell Martin as Delia And Wake actor Shaun Evans as serial killer John.

It followed the pair’s relationship beginning after meeting in a pub in London in 1991 to the times Delia tried to leave him after he became increasingly violent, until John attacked her with an axe.

After the crime drama series aired, the broadcaster also aired a documentary, in which Delia spoke to the camera about her ordeal.

After explaining the details of their relationship, Delia showed cameras the exact bed where her partner attacked her after she told him she wanted to end their relationship.

“These ropes came out and he tied them to the bed and then he tied my ankles and grabbed my arms and held me down,” she recalled.

“At first I struggled and then I figured out it was best not to wrestle because he fixed it, and it would tighten up if I wrestled.”

Sweeney then pulled out a knife and a gun, hidden by the bed, and began questioning her about ex-boyfriends.

“He threatened to cut out my tongue if I screamed,” she said.

Sweeney subsequently admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend and two men and “cutting up their bodies and throwing them in a canal” a few years earlier.

When viewers heard the disturbing details, they were surprised, and some were shocked that Delia had decided to keep the furniture she was attacked on.

“Wow… Delia still has all the furniture and the bed that monster made (and the mattress, it seems). Gosh! I would have burned the place down,” Nicola posted on X.

“I’m surprised Delia still has all the furniture John made,” user Flopsy shared.

‘I don’t understand why the real Delia Balmer would keep anything associated with John Sweeney – the table he made, the bed he tied her to, his drawings… I’d like to get rid of it all!’ DVDFever added.

Many others also praised her courage as she spoke about her painful experience.

‘God, this is harrowing. Delia, you are a strong, courageous woman, and I am so happy that you have found a happy future after this hell,” Charlotte wrote.

‘Watch Until I Kill You: The Real Story. It’s so incredible what one person can handle. I feel pretty sick seeing Delia reliving her hell,” Jacky said.

“What a very courageous and resilient woman Delia Balmer is,” Laura added.

After being held hostage for a week and being attacked several times, Delia was released by Sweeney.

However, her life was threatened again when he attacked her for a second time after she was released on bail.

After being rescued by a neighbor, who hit Sweeney in the head with a baseball bat, Delia spent months in the hospital recovering from her horrific injuries while he went on the run.

As one officer recalled in the documentary, they discovered a “bag full of items he needed to dispose of Delia’s body,” including knives, rubber gloves, rope, tarp and duct tape.

While initially holding Delia hostage, Sweeney had admitted to the murder of his former partner, Melissa Halstead, whose dismembered body was found in a canal in the city. The Netherlands in 1990.

After going on the run in 1994, he was arrested six years later in 2001 and given a nine-year prison sentence for the attempted murder of Delia.

A year earlier, he had also murdered Paula Fields and was ultimately found guilty of her and Halstead’s murders in 2011 as well.

According to the BBC, authorities believe he murdered three more women between 1970 and 1990.

The former carpenter, 67, is still in prison.
