Gauteng education suspends food sales in schools – SABC News

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says it has instructed all schools to suspend the sale of food on and around school grounds until further notice.

It says the alarming increase in the number of incidents suspected food poisoning announced its decision at various schools in the province.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says the aim is to protect the health and wellbeing of students.

“Schools and SGBs are directed to closely monitor and regulate vendors, shops and other outlets selling food to students. In particular, schools must ensure that only food with nutritional value is sold within or near school buildings, that no expired or repackaged food products are sold to students and that any individual or business selling food to students is compliant.” , Mabona adds.
