Laredo residents are raising concerns with city hall about water quality

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – City leaders met with residents Thursday evening, November 7, to discuss concerns about Laredo’s water quality. At the town hall, people were able to ask questions and share their concerns about the city’s plans to solve ongoing problems.

The meeting, with more than a dozen attendees, quickly became an exchange between officials and locals. Laredo’s mayor and city manager were on hand to answer questions. They emphasized that the water problems did not arise overnight and have been a problem since 2008.

Some residents, like Roque Godinez, were not convinced. Residents, however, were skeptical. “Stop blaming each other. Something has gone seriously wrong,” he says. “Laredo is growing too fast and there is a lack of supervision. The boil water notice came days too late and people got sick without knowing why.”

Godinez suggested the city should make better use of its current inspectors by placing them where they are needed most. To address staffing shortages, the city’s Human Resources team was at the meeting to provide information about open positions in the utility department.

City officials vowed to continue working on the water system and said they would soon host a new city hall to keep the public informed.
