Currently ready for NWSL Quarterfinals Saturday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Thousands of fans will pack CPKC Stadium Saturday morning as Kansas City Stream makes even more history.

The club will host the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL quarterfinals. The match marks the first play-off match in the world’s first stadium built for a professional women’s sports team.

“The fact that we now have this facility, this stadium and that we are walking on this field is electric,” said head coach and sporting director Vlatko Andonovski. ‘It’s loud. We’re going to play a football match on it. It’s just crazy.”

The Current is riding a nine-game undefeated streak on Saturday. Their last loss came on September 1 to the Courage.

“We have to win this game,” said goalkeeper Almuth Schult. “We are facing a very good opponent who already beat us in September. This irritates us, because we don’t like losing. We love playing in front of our fans and we hope we can win the next match.”

The NWSL’s top scorer, current forward Temwa Chawinga, remains doubtful to take the field.

She missed the team’s regular season finale with a knee injury.

“Temwa was actually able to train today, which is very positive for us,” said Andonovski. “At the end of the day, we need to know if the part of the leg that hurt her is going to flare up and how much, and if that will free her up for tomorrow’s game.”

Saturday’s game starts at 11 a.m. on KCTV5.
