Sarandon apologized a few weeks later she called her choice of words a “terrible mistake.”

“To convey my concern about a rise in hate crimes, I said that Jewish Americans, as targets of rising anti-Semitic hatred, are ‘getting a taste of what it’s like to be Muslim in this country that is so often subjected to violence . ‘” her social media post began.

“This formulation was one terrible mistake, she continued, “because this implies that Jews were ignorant of persecution until recently, when the opposite is true.” As we all know, from centuries of oppression and genocide in Europe to the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh, PA, Jews have long been familiar with discrimination and religious violence that continues to this day.

“I deeply regret that I trivialized this reality and hurt people with this comment. “It was my intention to show solidarity in the fight against all kinds of intolerance, and I am sorry that I did not do that,” she added.
