Louisiana lawmakers are considering a constitutional amendment that would create a new business court

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Louisiana lawmakers will consider a proposed constitutional amendment to create new specialized courts in the state during the third special session of the year.

Senate Bill 1written by Sen. Jay Morris, R-West Monroe, proposes creating new courts focused on business-related matters. Morris said at a Nov. 7 committee meeting that Louisiana is an outlier compared to the many states around the country that already have some type of these courts.

“I feel that we must have the ability and opportunity to ensure that complex cases in the business world can have a higher degree of expertise in the judiciary to deal with complex issues efficiently and quickly, which is a big deal for us appeal to attract more people. and more businesses to our state,” said Morris.

Louisiana House passes bill to cut income tax to workers

The proposed constitutional amendment would require a two-thirds majority of lawmakers in the House of Representatives and the Senate. If approved by lawmakers, voters would decide the proposal in national elections on Nov. 15, 2025.

SB 1 is scheduled for a third reading and final passage in the Senate on November 14.
