The South African Cabinet has called on aggrieved parties in Mozambique to have the country’s Constitutional Council (CC) adjudicate on their dissatisfaction with the outcome of the recent elections.

There have been violent protests in the country after the opposition rejected the results of the country’s recent elections, claiming it was rigged.

The results showed Frelimo emerged victorious with a 70% majority, having since faced opposition from opposition parties.

South African Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, addressed the media in Parliament yesterday after a cabinet meeting.

“It is South Africa’s view that all parties that are unhappy with the outcome of the election and contest it, as we had in our own case in South Africa, had parties that not only took disputes to the IEC, but even went as far as the Electoral Court. Incitement to violence by disadvantaged parties is not acceptable because it would mean that we would not have elections on this continent where there is a party that is dissatisfied because they will all incite violence and want to change the election outcome through violence. The parties in Mozambique must submit their grievances and their evidence of dissatisfaction or dissatisfaction to the Constitutional Council and allow the Constitutional Council to rule on the matter.”

Meanwhile, African National Congress (ANC) First Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane is calling for patience and calm amid protests in Mozambique.

Mokonyane says there must be a call for respect for the rule of law to ensure that the official announcement of the results is done peacefully.
