Drought conditions are slowly improving in South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The latest drought monitor shows slow improvements for the state of South Carolina. The latest update now takes into account the rainfall we see today, but the rain we receive today will help improve conditions.

Last week, 100% of the state of South Carolina was in drought. Based on the latest update, only 72% of the state is in drought.

Horry, Georgetown, Dillon and parts of Marlboro County are still experiencing moderate drought. However, last week 36% of the state was in a moderate drought, compared to 11% where we are now.

Now, the rain that falls today will help a little bit, but we need more consistent and significant rainfall to help make a dent in the precipitation deficits.

After the rainfall we see today, we will again be on a dry track until next week when the next cold front passes. If that cold front moves through, there will be only a few isolated showers, but that won’t be enough to significantly help the drought.
