(International) Lu, “56 million won paid” to soldiers with disabilities in ‘special military operation’

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to pay up to 4 million rubles (about 56 million won) in temporary compensation to soldiers disabled by serious injuries during Ukraine’s “special military operation.”

On the 14th (local time), the TAS news agency reported that a presidential decree was posted on the official Russian Internet portal for legal information to increase disability compensation for soldiers participating in “special military operations” to 4 million rubles.

Previously, all seriously injured soldiers in “special military operations” received compensation of 3 million rubles (42 million won). Five million rubles (70 million won) will be paid to the relatives of the dead.

If a soldier seriously injured by this day’s decision experiences a disability, he or she will receive an additional 1 million rubles (14 million won).

A plan was also introduced to differentially pay disability benefits depending on the severity of the injury. Servants with serious injuries will receive 3 million rubles, soldiers with moderate injuries will receive 1 million rubles, and other casual soldiers will receive 100,000 rubles.

Russian media have pointed out that it is not fair to receive the same compensation regardless of the degree of injury.

However, there is criticism that this measure is in fact a “reduction in compensation”. This is because the country has withdrawn its promise to pay 3 million rubles to all soldiers injured on the battlefield in Ukraine in the past and lowered the minimum amount to 100,000 rubles.

Reuters said: “Russia cuts compensation payments to injured soldiers in Ukraine,” and analyzed that the costs of “special military operations” are rising.

Some worry that if a doctor makes a diagnosis by reducing the severity of the injury, he or she may not receive appropriate compensation.
