Southwest Phone on Fire: Houston flight from Denver evacuated after phone battery ignited; According to the airline, two people were injured

DENVER, Colo. — Two people were injured after a flight from Denver to southwest Houston was evacuated due to a cell phone fire.

A cell phone battery ignited on the plane near the gate of Denver International Airport on Friday morning, according to airline officials.

All 108 passengers on Southwest Airlines Flight 3316 were evacuated safely, the airline said. The passengers in the back of the plane exited the plane via emergency slides, and the passengers in the front exited the plane normally.

One passenger reported a minor injury during the evacuation and the passenger whose phone caught fire was reportedly treated for burns.

In a statement Friday, the airline said a seat caught fire from the burning phone and was successfully extinguished by crew members.

The flight was headed to Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport. Southwest said it was working to accommodate the passengers on another plane to Houston.

The investigation into the incident continues.
