Chicago police are investigating after three people were injured in a fire at an apartment building on Ohio Street in West Garfield Park

CHICAGO (WLS) — Three people were injured, one seriously, in a fire at an apartment complex in West Garfield Park, Chicago police said.

Chicago Fire Department officials said the investigation had been turned over to Chicago Police detectives due to possible criminal activity.

A fireball raged on top of a two-apartment building on the 4700 block of West Ohio Street in West Garfield Park.

Hours later, all that remains is the building’s shell, and everything inside, charred in the inferno.

“All our stuff was destroyed,” said a woman who lived in the apartment complex. ‘Like we have nowhere else to go. We don’t know who else to contact or anything.”

The woman said she was not home at the time of the fire. She said she spoke to her family about what happened.

“It sucks to have a house and then out of nowhere it gets burned down. Out of nowhere,” she said.

Chicago police said the fire broke out just after 11:30 p.m

Fire officials said it started on the back porch of the building by open flame ignition with what they call “available combustibles.”

Dozens of firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, smashing windows and using flashlights to search the building.

Displaced tenants wrapped themselves in Red Cross blankets to stay warm.

Police said a 33-year-old man was taken to Loyola Medical Center in critical condition with burns to his face and arms.

The woman ABC7 spoke to anonymously says people used a ladder leaning against the building… to pull the critically injured man from the second floor of the building… which burst into flames.

“One of the people who got hurt was screaming for help – like it’s burning, it’s burning! Help me someone, help me!” she said.

Two other people, an 81-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, were also taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Unfortunately, one family’s dog did not make it.

“Rest in peace Luna,” she said. “She was also burned by the fire. We couldn’t save her… ‘It was our home, and now it’s gone.’

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire in the first place.
