Woman tragically dies after car-bus collision in Limerick

A FEMALE passenger in a car involved in a collision with a bus in County Limerick almost three weeks ago has tragically died.

The woman was airlifted to Cork University Hospital with “serious injuries” following the road traffic incident near Ballylanders on Saturday afternoon, October 26.

All occupants of the bus, probably about twenty children, were medically examined at the scene on the R513. None required immediate hospital treatment.

There was a large response from the emergency services; helicopters, firefighters, paramedics and gardai all attended the scene.

A Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is investigating the now fatal collision. It is believed an off-duty member of An Garda Siochana was the driver of the car. It is understood he is not a member of the Limerick Garda Division.

A spokesperson for GSOC said at the time that they had received a referral from A Garda Síochána in relation to a road traffic accident in Ballylanders.

“The referral was made by a garda inspector under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.

“The matter is now being investigated by GSOC under section 91 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005. As such, no further comment will be made at this time,” the GSOC spokesperson said.

Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 provides for independent investigation into any matter which appears to indicate that the conduct of a member of An Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of or serious harm to any person.

GSOC called on witnesses to come forward in October.

“GSOC would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the road traffic collision or saw the gray Toyota Auris car driving in the area prior to the collision, or may have captured it on CCTV, dashcams and/or on a mobile device.

“Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact GSOC on 0818 600 800 or [email protected]

GSCO was contacted on Friday following the death of the female passenger.

A spokesperson said: “This investigation remains open. As such, GSOC cannot provide any further comment at this time.”
