Four people, including a soldier, were killed in suspected cult-related violence in the Makurdi district, the capital of the North Bank. Benue stateon Thursday and Friday evenings.

The tragic incidents highlight escalating tension in the suburb, where clashes between rival cult groups have increased in recent weeks.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victims of Friday’s attack, including two young men, were not affiliated with any sect.

Instead, they were allegedly innocent victims of a rampage perpetrated by suspected cult members.

Eyewitness and local vigilante report

Nura Umar, chairman of the Vigilante Group, known as Operation Shara in the North Bank, confirmed the fatalities in two separate attacks. Speaking about the Friday incident, Umar revealed:

“These cultists caused havoc last night (Friday) around 10pm to 11pm; a soldier and two boys were killed. It happened around the BIPC. Those (deceased) boys were not cult members. Those who shot them were suspected of being cult members.”

Umar also noted that a suspected cult member was killed at his residence on Thursday evening.

Police confirmation and response

The Benue State Police Command confirmed cult activities in the North Bank area but reported lower casualty figures. Police spokesperson Catherine Anene stated:

“Yes, there was cult activity on the North Bank, but I am aware that one person was killed, a young civilian.”

Anene added that additional security officers have been deployed to the area to curb further violence.

DPO shot dead at military checkpoint in Zamfara

In the meantime, Legit.ng previously reported that Halliru Liman, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Wasagu Division of the Police in Kebbi Stateis dead.

According to reports making the rounds on Thursday, August 29, Liman has passed away when he was allegedly shot dead by a soldier at a checkpoint in Zamfara stands.
