Genoa announces former Premier League icon as new manager

Genoa have confirmed that Patrick Vieira has been appointed as their new manager, with the 48-year-old taking over from Alberto Gilardino after a difficult start to the season.

The Italian side have won just two of their 12 Serie A matches so far and are 17th in the top flight, one point above Lecce in the relegation zone.

Now they have a new coach and Vieira gets a two-year contract in Liguria.

He will be tasked with moving them upwards for the remainder of the season, as well as patching up his relationship with star striker Mario Balotelli, which saw the pair fall out in Nice.
