Controlled explosion carried out at Glasgow bus station after reports of ‘suspicious item’

A “potentially suspicious item” was destroyed by bomb squads at a bus station on Wednesday.

Officers were called to Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow at around 1.10pm on November 20 following reports of a suspicious item.

Surrounding roads have been closed and the public has been urged to avoid the area. The slip road to the M8 at Junction 16 was closed but has since reopened.

A large cordon was erected around the station after it was evacuated and the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to the scene.

Killermont Street, between West Nile Street and North Hanover Street, and Cowcaddens Road, between Port Dundas Road and North Hanover Street, are closed.

Glasgow Caledonian University, on Cowcaddens Road, told students and staff it had been asked to evacuate.

Police Scotland have confirmed that a controlled explosion took place at the scene and nothing suspicious was found.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident and possession of offensive weapons. An investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.

Officers are now trying to ensure that the area returns to normal.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Three men have been arrested following an incident at Buchanan bus station in Glasgow on Wednesday 20 November 2024.

“This afternoon around 1:10 p.m., police received a report of a possible suspicious item at the bus station. Officers contacted EOD and a controlled explosion occurred. Nothing suspicious was found.

“As a precaution, the bus station and surrounding buildings were evacuated.

“Three men have been arrested in connection with the possession of offensive weapons and investigations are ongoing.

“Officers are working to get the area back to normal.”
