OBA’s Smith on recent violence, government and more

“Why has the Minister of National Security remained silent after the recent shootings and stabbings?” Minister of National Security Ben Smith said.

Mr Smith said: “It feels like the government has accepted this type of behavior in our community. Where’s the outrage?

“What message do we send to the perpetrators? That they have free rein to do whatever they want without consequences? Bermuda cannot afford this. Residents deserve to know that the government has not become immune to violence in the community – especially when it comes to guns and knives. The government’s silence is deafening.”

Mr Smith continued: “The community needs to know that anti-social behavior will not be tolerated and those in power will do everything in their power to stamp it out.

“While the One Bermuda Alliance is pleased, the number of police recruits will increase by 2026. With pensions, suspensions and the chance of burnout due to excessive overtime during all these increased violent crimes. The number of officers must be increased so that the Bermuda Police Service has the resources necessary to conduct community policing.

Mr Smit added. “Maybe deploy Royal Bermuda Regiment personnel to perform guard duties. This will help the police remain focused on their core tasks.”
