Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips recalled in Michigan

A North Carolina-based pet food company is recalling dog treats that could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, federal officials said.

Carolina Prime Pet Inc.of Lenoir, North Carolina, is recalling 400 16-ounce bags of Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips dog treats Food and Drug Administration said in an online post.

Salmonella can affect animals that eat the product, and there is a risk to humans when handling contaminated products, especially if they have not washed their hands thoroughly after contact with the products or with surfaces exposed to these products, according to the FDA.

The potential for contamination was discovered after tests conducted by a third-party laboratory revealed contamination in a related, but commercially unmarketed batch of the same product.

No illnesses associated with the problem have been reported.

Is salmonella dangerous for dogs or people?

Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets only have loss of appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

Salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. It can also result in more serious conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Were the contaminated treats sent to Michigan?

Hollywood Feed Carolina made chicken chips were distributed Hollywood Feed Stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

There are half a dozen Hollywood Feed stores in there southeast Michigan.

The treats were also available through online retailer www.hollywoodfeed.com.

How do I know if I have the treats?

The product comes in a purple and black 16 ounce bag, labeled on the back with lot number 20051324L2 and an expiration date of 11/13/25.

This is the only lot number that may be contaminated.

What should I do with the treats?

Consumers who purchased the affected 16-ounce bags of Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips should stop using them.
