Man, 77, charged with attempted murder for allegedly beating his wife with a shotgun

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 77-year-old man on Hawaii Island was charged with second-degree attempted murder after he allegedly beat his wife with a shotgun.

Police say that on Nov. 22, shortly before 10:30 p.m., a man who called 911 identified himself as Lowell Thomas Pofahl and said he was trying to kill his 76-year-old wife.

When patrol officers arrived at their home in Nanawale Estates, they found the victim lying in a pool of blood with serious, life-threatening injuries, including a skull fracture, brain hemorrhage, concussion, partial thumb amputation and numerous stab wounds and lacerations.

She was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and then – due to the severity of her injuries – flown to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where she remained hospitalized in stable condition.

Police arrested Pofahl and recovered several weapons in the home, including a shotgun, allegedly used by Pofahl to hit and wound the victim.

In addition to attempted murder, Pofahl was charged with first-degree assault, abuse of a family or household member, and carrying or using a firearm in the commission of a separate crime.

His bail was set at $1.6 million.
