Suspect in Birmingham’s Five Points mass shooting charged with quadruple murder at Trendsetters Lounge

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC– The man accused of shooting and killing four people and wounding 17 others outside a Five Points South club in September has been indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury in another mass shooting in July and a murder in August.

Damien McDaniel was charged with capital murder (two or more persons) and four counts of capital murder (committed by or through the use of a deadly weapon fired or otherwise used in or from a vehicle) for the murders of Markeshia Gettings, Stevie McGhee, Angela Weatherspoon and Lerandus Anderson Trendsetters Lounge on 27th Street North.

During a press conference Tuesday evening, Birmingham police confirmed that both Damien McDaniel and Hatarius Woods face four counts of capital murder and have been charged with 10 counts of first-degree assault in connection with the July 13 shooting that occurred during a birthday party .

Birmingham police have not released a clear timeline, but initially said there was an altercation during the party, after which someone drove by and fired shots into the lounge.

McGhee, 42, was found dead on the sidewalk, and Gettings, 42, and Weatherspoon 56, were found dead inside, according to Birmingham police. Anderson was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital.

A Birmingham police sergeant testified at a civil hearing about the “pandemonium and panic” he witnessed when he arrived at the nightclub the night of the shooting.

McDaniel and Woods were also charged with murder (during a first- or second-degree burglary or attempted burglary committed by the suspect) in the August 13 killing of Charlie Herbert Moore.

Moore, 61, was found shot to death in an apartment in a residential community in North Birmingham known as Vice Hills.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, officers were alerted by Real Time Crime Center Specialists to a stolen vehicle in the area of ​​43rd Avenue North and heard gunshots in a nearby apartment while investigating. Officers saw a person leaving an apartment with a gun, confronted him and fired shots, according to a news release.

Birmingham police were initially unsure if the suspect had been hit. On Tuesday, they said the suspects, McDaniel and Woods, were not hit.

McDaniel was previously charged with six murders that occurred during a violent crime spree that began on September 19. McDaniel is charged with murder Diontranet Brown35, in the 604 Lounge, which officers believe was not the intended target. Two days later, officers say McDaniel killed four people and injured 17 others outside a club in Five Points South. He is also charged The murder of Jamarcus McIntyre, which occurred less than 24 hours after the mass shooting.

McDaniel is accused of killing 11 people and shooting 30 others in Birmingham since July.

Birmingham Police confirmed at around 4pm on Tuesday that Hatarius Woods had been taken into custody during a raid by their crime prevention taskforce.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald says some of the murders mentioned at the press conference are being investigated as murder-for-hire.

Birmingham police say they believe multiple shooters are involved in the Five Points South mass shooting, but McDaniel is the only one currently in custody.
