Nigeria: Laguda’s bill that seeks to ban and punish organ trafficking in Nigeria advances to second reading

The first bill, sponsored by the Chairman of the Committee on Polytechnic Education of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Fuad Laguda, who represents Surulere Constituency 1 and wants to ban and punish organ trafficking in Nigeria, has advanced the second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, which is an act to amend the National Health Act of 2014, has been referred to the House Committee on Healthcare Service “for further legislative action and proceedings.”

Fuad Laguda noted in a statement he signed electronically that if the amendment is passed, “the perpetrator will receive severe punishment for his actions.”

He said: “My first bill, for an Act to amend the National Health Act, 2014, to prohibit and punish organ trafficking in Nigeria and related matters, has passed its second reading.”

“The purpose of the National Health Act 2014 is to provide a general and comprehensive framework for the regulation, development and management of a national health care system and to establish standards for the provision of health care in the Federation.”

“If the amendment is passed, perpetrators of organ trafficking in Nigeria will face the consequences of their actions, with severe penalties.”

“This second passage has referred the bill to the House Committee on Healthcare Services for further legislative action and proceedings.”
