DepEd investigates peeping incident in scouting jamboree

ILOILO CITY — The Iloilo Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division has initiated legal proceedings against a teacher accused of voyeurism during the Iloilo (Confesor) Council provincial jamboree in Calinog.

“DepEd prioritises the safety and well-being of students and participants in all activities under its purview, and such conduct, if proven, is unequivocally condemned,” the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

The incident involved a 57-year-old male teacher allegedly peeping on a 31-year-old female teacher in a makeshift bathroom at Hinilawod camp on Monday.

Authorities said the female teacher immediately sought help, leading to the citizen’s arrest of the male teacher, who was later handed over to local police.

The suspect has been charged with violating Republic Act 11313, or the Safe Spaces Act, and has been released on bail.

DepEd-Iloilo emphasized that it will not undermine the incident and will not tolerate misconduct that could harm its employees.

“(We) are working with local authorities, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) and other relevant agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure accountability,” the agency added.

It further assured the provision of psychosocial support to those affected and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against abuse, harassment and exploitation.

Meanwhile, Matt Palabrica, Iloilo 3rd District Councilor and BSP Council Chairman, condemned the incident, stressing that it affected the integrity of the event.

The BSP Confesor Council Legal Committee is also conducting its investigation and will submit its findings to the BSP National Council, which has authority over any disciplinary action.
