Pro Life campaign in Ireland encourages voters to consider political parties’ stance on abortion in upcoming elections

CV NEWS FEED // Advocates at Pro Life Campaign, a non-denominational human rights organization in Ireland, is calling on Irish citizens to do their research on political parties’ positions on abortion in the run-up to local and European elections .

The annual March for Life in Dublin attracted large crowds on May 6. According to a Crux report, Pro Life campaign representative Eills Mulroy told those in attendance that the number of abortions in Ireland was “skyrocketing” under the country’s current laws.

Mulroy also announced that the Pro Life campaign would provide a “comprehensive voter guide” ahead of the upcoming election to help voters decide where to vote.

Irish law allows abortion procedures for women up to 12 weeks pregnant. However, the government is currently locked in a debate over whether it will implement a series of recommendations aimed at expanding abortion.

The Department of Health commissioned lawyer Marie O’Shea in 2022 to carry out a review of Ireland’s abortion legislation since it was enshrined in the Eighth Amendment referendum in 2018.

In his 2023 report, O’Shea made several recommendations. Among them is a call to remove the requirement for women to have a three-day waiting period between their first abortion consultation and the abortion itself.

O’Shea also recommended decriminalizing abortion law violations for medical professionals.
