“Rolando (Caught in the Rain)” by Dusty Locane

With artists releasing songs at a fast, breakneck pace, it’s hard for the average hip-hop enthusiast to keep up with everything, no matter how exploited they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Dusty Locane – “Rolando (Caught in the Rain)”

Pop Smoke’s influence on Dusty Locane is not subtle. Dusty represents the same neighborhood and has a growling voice that could be picked up on a seismograph. If “Rolando (Caught in the Rain)” wasn’t so good, I’d probably be willing to consider Dusty a copycat, but the catchiness is undeniable. Basso Beatz’s production, which samples Fousheé’s smooth vocals (as Sleepy Hallow’s “Deep End” previously did), is one of Brooklyn’s best drill beats to date. I’m willing to give Dusty the benefit of the doubt since he only has three official songs so far, and it took Pop that long to get past Sheff G’s heavy inspiration on his music. The same thing could happen to Dusty as he gets more comfortable, but the shadow he’s trying to escape is huge.
